During my lunch break, I decided to browse the aisles of the Superdrug store near our offices, which is usually packed with their bestsellers, including e.l.f and Revolution. Scanning through their eyelash extension section has become my favourite thing to do, but I have to say, I've noticed a huge shift in the extensions that are on sale, and the ones that are selling out quickly.

From Tatti Lashes and Eylure to Studio London and LOLA, more lash extension brands are releasing brown editions of their favourite extensions and if you head onto TikTok, you'll find over 89 million posts of influencers, creators and your everyday social media user getting brown lashes, with many praising how subtle they look. But what has kicked off this new trend?

Leading lash technician and trainer, Agnes Dos Santos tells PS UK that she's seen a noticeable increase in the demand for brown lash extensions and tints. "This trend aligns with the growing preference for natural, low maintenance beauty looks. Many clients are opting for brown lashes to achieve a polished appearance that feels effortless and versatile for both day and night," she reveals.

Similarly, expert lash and brow artist Emmy Clayton tells us that she encourages clients to opt for a brown-black tint, as opposed to a blue-black, as they actually add more impact to the overall look. "My favourite combination is a black-brown combination tint, which isn't quite as harsh or a huge contrast to their natural lashes, particularly compared to using a black or black/blue tint, which is often used to deliver more depth," she tells us. "A black/brown combination is still highly effective and impactful, giving a softer, more natural look. A black/blue tint for lashes can look less so! For those with longer lashes, they often request a black/brown tint, otherwise, they feel their lashes can look fake and heavy, rather than the natural look they are after."

Dos Santos adds that brown lashes offer a softer, natural look that can compliment anyone, as opposed to traditional black lashes. "They compliment a wide range of skin tones and eye colours, making them a versatile choice. As more people gravitate towards subtle, everyday beauty looks, brown lashes provide a refined way to enhance features without appearing overly dramatic," she tells us.

According to Dos Santos, who's also the founder of her own salon Agnes Dos Santos, brown lashes are particularly flattering for individuals with lighter hair, fair to medium skin tones or softer features. She says: "They can enhance the natural beauty of those with hazel, green, or light brown eyes by creating an understated look. However, they can suit anyone seeking a gentler, less intense lash enhancement."

"They softly frame the eyes without the boldness of black lashes, creating a more blended, seamless effect. This makes them ideal for enhancing natural beauty while maintaining a low key aesthetic," Dos Santos adds.

Should you be interesting in brown eyelash extensions, but would rather go the DIY route (raises hand) then we have the perfect guide to applying your strip lashes or clusters from Love Island makeup artist Hannah Humphries.

Start in Small Stages

Humphries starts by telling us to start in small stages and trim from the outer edge if needed. "Trim your lashes if needed, depending on your eye size. Add a few layers of glue and wait around 20 seconds until it gets tacky. I usually like to use clear glue and about two layers and I can guarantee they won't come off," she tells us.

Look Down to Apply

"Look down into your mirror and apply your extensions to your lash, I always apply with tweezers but it can also depend on the nail type," Humphries shares. "Always keep your eye open and look down, otherwise it can be more irritable and make sure to play about with the position of your extensions. If the lash isn't comfy the eyes will water through the day and your extensions could begin to lift.

Remove Excess Glue for Reuse

"If you're planning to reuse your strip lashes or clusters, gently remove your lashes, don't rip them off. Then remove the excess, old glue and give them a good wash using a lash shampoo like the Eyelash Emporium Lash Cleansing Foam (£11).

Makeup and Lashes Have No Rules

"Personally, I love a half lash or a cluster, but it's completely up to you. You can customise your lash look to your liking and have them as natural or glamorous as you'd like. As long as your eyes don't look droopy, you're all good!" Humphries adds.
